PICKERINGTON, Ohio — A police chase in Pickerington ended Friday morning with one man in custody and a police cruiser out of service.

Pickerington Police Chief Tod Cheney says it happened just after 3 a.m.

Video acquired by 10TV shows just how the scene just off Diley Road played out.

An officer noticed a suspicious vehicle in an area off of Diley Road that is booming with construction and is no stranger to criminals.

“Since last August, we've had at least seven reported construction- related thefts,” Cheney said.

Thinking that might have been the case here, the officer chased the suspect to the Redbud Commons.

“The suspect then suddenly backed up — the officer kind of tried to block him in, but the suspect ended up driving around the police cruiser, up into the yard of a condo and around the police cruiser,” Cheney said.

He said the officer knew the subdivision only had one way in and one way out, so he sped in the opposite direction, trying to cut him off

“The suspect slammed into the front end of the police cruiser and knocked the police cruiser out of commission with the damage,” Cheney said.

The suspect ended up going through a person's yard, taking out a tree and bushes, before getting back to Diley and tried to turn onto S.R. 256, but lost control and hit a tree.

He then got out and ran before officers used a taser on him and took him into custody.

Cheney says the suspect's name has not yet been released nor his charges but says the Fairfield County Prosecutor's Office has the case.

Cheney says the officer involved in that chase escaped injury.
