NEWARK, Ohio -- Vice President Mike Pence is speaking at a Get Out the Vote rally in Newark after arriving in Columbus Monday.

Pence is attending the afternoon rally organized by Republican Troy Balderson who is running against Democrat Danny O'Connor in the highly-coveted 12th congressional district.

Debbee Ashley who lives just steps away from the host venue says she cannot remember a sitting President or Vice President making a stop in Newark, but she says she is sure the visit will draw a large crowd.

“There will probably be hundreds of people," she said. "They’ll probably be lined up with cars and everything.”

City leaders said the event is free but those looking to attend are expected to RSVP to the event using the Eventbrite website.

“This all transpired very quickly,” Newark Mayor Jeff Hall said.

Hall said security is a top concern and the Newark Police Department is working hand in hand with several other local and federal agencies.

“There’s a tight coordination between local law enforcement through the county law enforcement through Columbus Police and of course the secret service.”

The city has not yet released road closures but is warning the public to prepare for an array of closures, blockages, and slowdowns come late afternoon Monday.

Doors open at 11 a.m. and the event begins at 1 p.m.

The event will take place at The Skylight, 85 East Main St., Newark.
