Twin polar bear cubs celebrate first birthday at Columbus Zoo

COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium's twin polar bear cubs, Neva and Nuniq, are celebrating their first birthday today at the Polar Frontier.

The animal care team provided the cubs and their mother, Aurora, with a special birthday-themed enrichment.

Polar bear, Aurora, welcomed her cubs on November 14, 2016. Aurora’s twins—female, Neva and male, Nuniq—were named through one of the many employee initiatives raising funds for conservation. Neva now weighs 247 pounds while her brother weighs in at 397 pounds.

Since 2008, the Zoo has contributed more than $250,000 to research benefiting polar bears in the Arctic.
