Braswell later died at the hospital and detectives immediately described her death as suspicious.

On Thursday, police charged Dwann Allen, 18, with felony child endangering in the case, Mallett reported.

According to police, Allen claimed that he was the little girl's father, but members of Braswell's family said he was not related to the girl, but only dating the girl's mother.

Erica Martinez, who identified herself as Braswell's aunt, said she had suspected that Allen was abusing the girl. She said the family had reported the abuse to authorities.

"My sister contacted child protective services and we're wondering why they never investigated it," Martinez said. "She called them to let them know it was abuse, maybe sexual abuse, so we were trying to figure out why they never went there."

Franklin County Children Services said it had no history with the little girl, or her mother, Mallett reported.

Police said additional charges could be filed in the case.
