Troopers from the West Jefferson Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash in Madison County.

The crash happened about 10:39 p.m. Monday on State Route 56 south of Moorman Road.

The incident began as a deputy from Madison County Sheriff's Office responded to the village of Mount Sterling to investigate a carjacking.

While en route, a second deputy saw a vehicle that matched the description of the stolen vehicle -- a maroon 2008 Chevy Equinox -- driving northbound on State Route 56.

The deputy turned around to try to confirm the license plate. The driver in the Equinox accelerated to a high rate of speed and, according to a press release, could not catch the vehicle.

A short time later, the deputy found the vehicle off the left side of the roadway.

Dominique L Sims, 32, of New Holland, and Chuck Tackett II, 20 of Washington Court House, were ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

According to investigators, the vehicle struck a utility pole and a tree.
