Spring clean your makeup

HOLLYWOOD - Beauty and skin care experts say spring is a good time to go through your cosmetics.

Not tossing out old makeup could have negative health effects.

“Old products can carry too much bacteria. Some of the chemicals can break down and you can develop an allergic reaction. And sometimes that reaction can go systemic. So it's a really serious matter,” says Dermatologist Ava Shamban.

Dr. Shamban says that even though your makeup has an expiration date from the time you open it, you cannot always trust it. “If it smells bad, don’t put it on your face. If it starts to crumble or flake or doesn’t mix well, throw it out.”

Dr. Shamban recommends these expiration dates for makeup:

Foundation: 6 months – 1.5 years
Powder cosmetics: 1-2 years
Lipstick: 6 months – 1 year
Eyeliner: 6 months – 1 year
Mascara: 3-6 months
