If your air conditioning system or individual A/C unit isn’t working properly — or has stopped working altogether — there are some common causes to be aware of to help you decide the next best course of action. Knowing what’s causing the issue is the first step to getting back that refreshing, cool air once again.

Lack of airflow

A few things can cause the air to stop flowing through your air conditioning system. These include:

  • Bad blower motor. The motor that spins to circulate air through the unit or system may stop working, which, in turn, causes the air to stop flowing over the coils. The coils then freeze and the unit may fail completely.
  • Low voltage. Your home’s electricity may be the culprit. Your A/C can use up a lot of electricity and it needs to have enough power to do its job.
  • Duct collapse. Air moves through your home through a series of ducts and if those ducts are clogged or dirty, that air is not going to move as well. That may also cause coils to freeze.
  • Dirty air filters. Air filters need to be cleaned and/or replaced on a regular schedule. A dirty and clogged air filter slows airflow and contributes to coil freeze.

Lack of, or low, refrigerant

The unit outside of your home that is part of your air conditioning system is a compressor that, as the name describes, compresses the refrigerant after putting off heat. That heated air turns liquid into gas, which then heats and lowers pressure. The compressor turns it back into a liquid that brings it through the home efficiently. When the refrigerant is low, that process doesn’t run smoothly and ice can build up, freezing the coils.

Dirty coils

Another common cause of air conditioning failure is dirty coils. Anything that obstructs airflow can build up and cause freezing. You also need to make sure the drip pans are not overflowing, lest those coils are further exposed to another opportunity to freeze up.
