Shots fired after Columbus police respond to report of suspicious person

COLUMBUS, Ohio - No one was hurt after shots were fired after a report of a suspicious person Saturday night on the near east side of Columbus.

Columbus police said officers responded to the 2100 block of Maryland Avenue near North Nelson Road.

When officers arrived, the person ran away and officers gave chase.

Around 7:45 p.m., dispatchers received a call for officers needing assistance.

Officers saw the person had a weapon and shots were fired, according to a statement from Columbus police.

Dispatchers initially said Columbus police fired shots but at the scene, a police spokesperson said it is unclear who fired.

Police said the person was not caught and a weapon was not found at the scene.
