A Franklin County sheriff's deputy was killed and another was injured in a single-vehicle crash early Saturday on the city's south side.

Investigators said Marty Martin, 35, and Lucas Holt, 31, were traveling in the southbound lanes of Interstate 71 near I-270 when their SUV flipped, 10TV News reported.

Martin, who was a passenger in the vehicle, died as he was being transported to Grant Medical Center. Holt was transported to Grant Medical Center in stable condition, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. He was released from the hospital Saturday evening.

The southbound lanes of I-71 were closed for about four hours after the crash. Wet roads may have been a factor in the crash, investigators said.

Martin's supervisors described him and Holt as rising stars at the sheriff's department, 10TV's Glenn McEntyre reported.

"They were coming along really well," said Franklin County Sheriff's Chief Steve Martin. "They had the potential to be very, very good detectives. It's tragic that one of them had their life cut so short."

Martin is survived by his wife, Jody, and 6-year-old son. Jody Martin is battling terminal cancer, McEntyre reported.

Relatives told 10TV News that she was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer a year before they were married.

The couple knew their time together was limited, and "they both understood the importance of living every day to it fullest," relatives said.
