Satanic Killer's Father: Son Should Die In Prison

A family seeking to keep the man who murdered their 5-year-old daughter behind bars got help Thursday from an unlikely source.

In 1993, Sara West was shot in the head, stabbed, and disemboweled, 10TV's Maureen Kocot reported. Investigators found the girl's remains in the woods near her father's home but Kevin West, the child's father, said he remembers it like it was yesterday.

"It's just something that you deal with every day.  It never goes away," West said.

Billy Joe Shafer, the man convicted of West's murder, is up for parole.

Shafer was 16 when he was arrested.

Investigators said Shafer told them he worshipped Satan, and said he regretted not killing West's brother as well, Kocot reported.

The family on Thursday met with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections and got some help Shafer's father, Danny Shafer.

Danny Shafer said he has not spoken to his son since the day of crime, Kocot reported. He told the parole board his son should die in prison.

"Sara is never going to climb out of that grave, so he should never climb out of that jail cell he's in," Danny Shafer said.

West's father hopes it is enough to convince the parole board that no one, not even Billy Shafer's own father, thinks he should get out of prison.

"It took a lot of courage for him to come forward like this," West said. "And I feel God sent him here for a reason."

The West family has collected 30,000 petition signatures to keep Shafer behind bars.

He is serving 23 years to life in prison. The parole board has not yet decided whether Shafer will be paroled.
