Ryan Shazier hands out backpacks to kids for back to school (KDKA)

(KDKA) - It was quite the shock for 15 young athletes when former Ohio State Buckeye and current Pittsburgh Steeler Ryan Shazier surprised them with a back to school shopping spree at Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Shazier brought backpacks and a $100 gift card to buy new athletic clothing and equipment.

“It's just an amazing opportunity because I was in some of their shoes when it came to growing up and playing sports and trying to be where I'm at now,” Shazier said.

Shazier even served as each child's personal shopping consultant.

“I have two kids myself sometimes they trying to pick one thing and you got a different vision for them but I think it was pretty cool just to help them out,” he said.

The group of deserving athletes are from BASE Pittsburgh - an organization unifying youth across all southwestern Pennsylvania communities.
