Push For More Columbus Bike Lanes Under Way

A temporary block-long bike lane was created on Gay Street in downtown Columbus on Friday to bring awareness to bike safety.

Organizers encouraged bicyclists to ride the lane from the morning through 1:30 p.m. in support of the idea to "complete streets" and bring bike infrastructure to all of downtown.

The bike lane push was done by the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) as part of World Car Free Day.

"A lot of cities have bicycle infrastructure in the downtown area, slows down traffic, it's safer for pedestrians. We have our dance space, cars have their dance space. It just seems to work out for all kinds of riders,” said Jessica Matthews.

Car Free Day is an event held every September that encourages people to give alternative transportation a try.

Several other businesses around Columbus are creating special displays to see what the community would look like with fewer cars and more green space.

Here's a list from MORPC:

Godman Guild, 303 East Sixth Ave Columbus, OH 43201.  Put in a permanent asphalt garden to reduce paved space in the parking lot and increase their community gardening space.

Ohio Environmental Council (OEC), 1207 Grandview Ave; Columbus, OH 43212. The OEC will convert a space in their parking lot into an office, complete with desk, chair, computer, coat rack, and potted plant.

Pattycake Bakery, 3009 N. High St. Columbus, Ohio 43202. Clintonville's Pattycake Bakery will be creating a "parklet" out of their parking lot with tables, chairs, bike parking, and plants.

CD102.5, 1581 N. High St. Columbus, OH 43201. DJ Brian Phillips of CD102.5 will be broadcasting live in front of Aveda Institute near Ohio State University's campus. The scene team will be on site with the legendary CD102.5 prize wheel.
