Police: Suspect in fatal Upper Arlington stabbing in custody

UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio - The suspect wanted in Upper Arlington's first homicide in almost eight years is now in custody.

Upper Arlington police said 51-year-old Jeffrey L. Smith was in custody as of Tuesday night. According to UA Police he turned himself into Columbus Police Tuesday night, without incident.

Police are continuing to investigating the incident that started about 4:30 p.m. Monday in the 1600 block of West Lane Avenue.

According to police, 31-year-old Charles Edward Hale McCoy had been in an argument with a female employee at a restaurant.

Smith then arrived at the location and got into an argument with McCoy before it turned into a physical altercation, where McCoy was stabbed.

When officers arrived they found McCoy bleeding and unresponsive. He was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital where he died.
