Police investigating after shots fired at 3 security guards in east Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Columbus police are investigating after shots were fired at three security guards early Sunday morning on the city's east side.

According to police, officers responded to the 1300 block of Brookway Road around 3:45 a.m.

Officials say the victims work security for Colonial Village and were conducting a routine patrol when they were flagged down by a suspect in front of a bus stop.

The victims believed the suspect was in need of their assistance and stopped. The security guards then got out of their vehicles and approached the suspect.

Police say two of the security guards recognized the suspect as they had been involved in a confrontation with him the previous night.

The man then pulled a gun from his waistband and pointed it at the security guards. As he tried to fire the gun, he realized there was not a round inside the chamber, which gave the victims time to take cover by one of the security vehicles.

The suspect then fired two gunshots at the security guards as he was backing up toward a building.

One of the security guards was able to fire a shot at the suspect before he fled the scene, according to police.

No one was injured during the incident.

Police have not provided a description of the suspect.
