Pedestrian dies months after being struck by stolen vehicle involved in chase

A 61-year-old man who was hit during a pursuit in Franklin County several months ago died Saturday evening, according to family.

Arthur Smith was struck on South Hamilton Road in late February by a vehicle that Franklin County Sheriff deputies were pursuing. He was taken to Grant Medical Center as a result.

The pursuit began after a deputy ran a tag check on a vehicle traveling eastbound on US-33. The car came back as stolen in Michigan. Five juveniles, ages 12-16, were arrested.

Franklin County Sheriff Dallas Baldwin released a statement regarding Smith's death:

“I am saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Smith. The entire Franklin County Sheriff’s Office offers our condolences to his family at this time.”
