Ohio University student found dead on Mill Street in Athens

The Athens Police Department is investigating the death of an 18-year-old Dublin, Ohio man at a house on Mill Street in Athens.

The man was identified as Collin L. Wiant. His family has been notified, according to police.

The call came into police at 2:49 a.m. Monday. Wiant was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead.

Athens police said they have not identified any dangers to the public.

A police spokesperson said the investigation was ongoing and more information will be released as appropriate and in coordination with the Coroner.

Ohio University released a statement on the death Tuesday:

We are deeply saddened (to) share news of the unexpected death of first-year student Collin Wiant from Dublin, Ohio, on Monday, November 12 at an off-campus apartment.

The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation by the City of Athens Police Department. The University is cooperating with investigating authorities.

Collin was a recent pledge of the Epsilon chapter of international social collegiate fraternity Sigma Pi. The off-campus apartment where he was found unresponsive is allegedly an unofficial annex of the Sigma Pi Epsilon chapter.

As an abundance of caution, the University has issued an administrative directive to the Epsilon chapter of Sigma Pi immediately cease and desist all organizational activities.

The Dean of Students has been in contact with Collin’s family, and the University continues to provide support to students and employees affected by this tragic loss.
