Ohio State officer who stopped campus attack awarded Medal of Valor by President Trump


An Ohio State police officer who stopped an attacker on the university’s campus in 2016 was honored Wednesday at a ceremony recognizing first responders for their service.

President Donald Trump awarded a Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor to Officer Alan Horujko during the ceremony.

Horujko shot and killed Abdul Razak Ali Artan on Nov. 28, 2016, after the 18-year-old drove into a crowd outside a classroom building and attacked people with a knife.

Horujko responded to the scene within minutes of the attack beginning and shot Artan after he refused to comply. The attack left 13 people injured.

Among those recognized in Wednesday's ceremony were:

  • Fallen Officer Sergeant Verdell Smith Sr. (City of Memphis Police Department, Tennessee) is being honored for giving his own life to save the lives of civilians in the path of a driver speeding recklessly through a crowd.
  • Fallen Officer Brent Thompson (Dallas Area Rapid Transit Police Department, Texas) is being honored for giving his life while engaging a deadly mass shooter and saving the lives of countless civilians and fellow officers during a protest march.
  • Lieutenant Xavier Torres, Retired; Sergeants Seth Chapman, Terry Smith Jr., Retired; Thomas Avila III and Rocky Wenrick; Corporal Andrew Rodriguez Sr. Retired; and Senior Officer Carlos Plascencia (Azusa Police Department, California) and Detective Manuel Campos (Irwindale Police Department, California) are being honored for placing themselves in mortal danger and saving the lives of civilians and fellow officers during a mass shooting incident on Election Day, 2016.
  • Senior Trooper Nicholas Cederberg (Oregon State Police) is being honored for placing himself in the line of fire and suffering life-threatening injuries in order to bring a murderer to justice.
  • Fire Captain Dustin Moore and Firefighter Paramedic Andrew Freisner (Lenexa Fire Department, Kansas) are being honored for risking their lives to rescue a family from a burning apartment building.
