Now with medical marijuana legal, businesses are taking another look at their policies and employment.

Working Partners is a training and consulting firm that works with businesses on risks associated with the misuse of substances. They’ve been helping employers on the hiring end in the business medical marijuana. They want companies to know they have a choice whether or not to hire the individual but encourage them to take a stance, create a policy and communicate that to workers.

“Here’s what we expect, here’s why we made our decision, here’s where you can go to get more information, here’s where you can go to ask questions,” said Managing Director Karen Pierce.

Pierce said another part of the dilemma is that marijuana isn't legal on the federal level. Employers under federal rule can't have certain employees using medical marijuana — for example, Department of Transportation workers with commercial licenses.
