The Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation says it plans to keep a closer eye on millions of doses of pain pills prescribed to injured workers every year.

The Dayton Daily News reports that the agency will more closely monitor pain pill distribution in an effort to control skyrocketing costs and rampant prescription drug abuse.

The agency is no longer covering prescriptions for controlled substances unless the provider enrolls in an automated reporting system designed to identify possible misuse of opiates.

The Bureau of Workers' Compensation — a state-run insurance program for injured workers — has paid for more than 188 million doses of narcotics during the past five years.

Last year the agency paid for 357,970 pain-pill prescriptions to 39,028 claimants.
