Ohio State University Officials Investigating Mumps Outbreak On Campus

At least 11 students at Ohio State University have mumps, and health officials are warning other students.

The Ohio State University said Thursday night nine students on campus have mumps and they suspect two more cases.

The Columbus health department will investigate the suspected cases on Friday.

Officials are investigating to determine how the disease has been spread at the school.

Four male students have reported cases, and five female students have come down with the mumps. 10TV has confirmed one case is a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. The fraternity declined to comment.

"That's definitely scary because you don't hear about mumps a lot," said student Ali Read.

"That's definitely really scary," said student Emma Dahlin.

The ages of those infected range from 19 to 22.

"We usually get buckeye alerts when like anything happens,"  said Dahlin.

10TV learned about the outbreak around 2:00 p.m. The university sent out a warning letter to students and staff around 9:30 p.m.

Mumps is a viral infection that affects the salivary glands. The illness usually lasts around 7-10 days.

It is highly contagious and can rapidly spread among members living in close quarters.

For all Ohio State students, the Wilce Student Health Center is available. Visit the website at <http://shs.osu.edu/>  for hours of operation and a list of additional facilities that provide medical care off campus and after hours.
