Ohio Lawmaker Introduces Marijuana Legalization Proposals

Ohio State Representative Robert Hagan introduced two measures in the Ohio House on Thursday that would legalize marijuana if passed.

Ohio State Democratic Rep. Robert Hagan of Youngstown introduced two proposals at the statehouse on Thursday that would make marijuana legal in the state.

The first bill focuses on medical usage, while the second measure would provide for a statewide vote for marijuana legalization.

Hagan said House Bill 153 would allow patients with certain chronic conditions to use the cannabis to treat their ailments. If passed, Ohio would be the 20th state to pass medical marijuana laws.

The second measure, House Joint Resolution 6, would provide Ohioans the chance for a statewide vote to legalize and tax marijuana. A news release from Hagan's office said the measure is based on recently passed legislation in Colorado.

"With billions upon billions spent on the war on drugs with little progress to show for it, it is time for more sensible drug policy in this country," Rep. Hagan said. "This issue deserves a 'Yes' or 'No' vote by the people."
