Woman dies after shooting near School Street and Spruce Street in downtown Columbus

Police said two men were also injured after a fight led to shots being fired early Saturday morning.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A woman died after she was shot near School Street and Spruce Street in downtown Columbus on July 11, according to police.

Anthony Humphrey, Jr. was arrested and charged with murder in October.

The woman, identified as 23-year-old Dariene Smith, was not able to communicate with officers due to the seriousness of her injury.

Police said Smith and a man were outside when two other men started fighting.

One of the men, later identified by police as Humprey, started shooting.

Smith and the man she was with were shot as they were running away.

Police said they took themselves to Ohio Health Rehabilitation Hospital on Dennison Avenue just before 2:30 a.m.

They were taken from the Ohio Health Rehabilitation Hospital to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Smith was pronounced dead around 9:30 a.m.

A third victim also showed up at Grant Medical Center to be treated after being shot in the hand.
