Unemployment applications higher than 2008 recession levels, Ohio agency says

Technicians are working on servers to ease the load on the system for those applying for unemployment benefits.

Many are still having a tough time applying for unemployment benefits. Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Director Kim Hall tells 10TV they are seeing more people apply than in the recession in 2008 and 2009.

They are working overtime so their servers can handle the amount of people applying online.

Hall says 96% of those applying are doing so online.

Hall says there is good news out there for independent contractors who normally wouldn't be eligible for benefits. The federal government is working on a package deal that would help those workers.

She says the biggest advice if you are hitting roadblocks trying to apply, be patient.

“Even if they are not able to immediately get into the system, they can try at a later time to apply. The date that they were unemployed is what will drive the benefits, so they will not lose a benefit amount,” Hall says.

Many have told 10TV they can't get through to apply because they have been on unemployment before and can't remember a PIN. Hall said they have moved more people to answer those questions, hoping to ease the call wait time.
