The Columbus Zoo makes a straight-forward approach in its ad that urges support for renewal of their levy.
The Committee for the Columbus Zoo Levy’s began airing the ad in support of Issue 15 today.
The ad repeatedly tells viewers that this is not a tax increase. We counted 5 times this 30 second ad said on screen and by voice that Issue 15 is not a tax increase.
The ad is accurate when it states that a quarter of the zoo's funding comes from continuing the zoo levy. If approved, the vote would keep Franklin County homeowners taxes the same to keep zoo funding at current levels, 10 Investigates Truth Test determined.
Patty Peters with the Columbus Zoo said, “Without levy support we would experience substantial cuts including a reduction in the number of animal exhibits, reduced operating hours and education programs, limited repairs and maintenance of our existing buildings and animal habitats, significant staff layoffs, and no additions, upgrades or new exhibits.”
Even a past opponent of a zoo levy in 2013, said he knows of no problems with this ad. Dan McCormick with Citizens for Responsible Taxation said of the new ad, “I know of no organized opposition to Issue 15.”
