SWACO educates area residents on America Recycles Day

SWACO is on a mission to help educate residents of Franklin County on the importance and benefits of recycling.

Thursday, November 15th, is America Recycles Day, a day that was created to raise awareness about recycling and the purchasing of recycled products.

The Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) launched their “Recycle Right” campaign earlier this year, which aims to educate Franklin County residents on what can and cannot be recycled.

There are five types of materials accepted for curbside recycling in Franklin County. These items are:

  1. plastic bottles and jugs
  2. glass bottles and jars
  3. metal cans
  4. cartons
  5. paper and cardboard

All other items should be reused, donated or disposed.

"Every single day, around 500 truckloads of material get delivered to the SWACO," said SWACO Communications Manager, Hanna Greer-Brown.

Greer-Brown also mentioned that many of these items had the potential to be recycled before reaching the landfill.

“Seventy percent of all the materials that come to the landfill had the potential to be recycled and we know there’s opportunity to do even more recycling," said Greer-Brown.

Recycling goes beyond its environmental benefits.

"Recycling has environmental benefits of course, conserve natural resources, we reduce the amount of pollution when we recycle but it also has societal and economic benefits when we recycle," said Greer-Brown.
