Sister-in-law says Columbus police officer injured in I-670 crash is recovering

Officer Hansel Henry was assisting a vehicle along I-670 near 4th Street when the driver of a minivan hit his cruiser which then struck him.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — It’s been several days since Columbus police officer Hansel Henry was hit by a driver along Interstate 670 at the 4th street ramp.

His family considers him “strong”, and sometimes, even the strongest go through some of the hardest challenges in life.

On Wednesday, 10TV sat down with Henry’s sister-in-law Ashley Kubin. She said he was recovering and was able to stand up just three days after the accident.

"You never think that these things could happen right, you know my sister and Hansel are super blessed that the outcome wasn't worse,” Kubin said.

On Sunday evening, Columbus police say Hnery was assisting a driver on the side of I-670 when a driver hit his cruiser which then hit him. The officer suffered multiple injuries.

Kubin said since the incident, the support from the community as well as Columbus police has been overwhelming.

"Just the small things they literally haven't had to worry about anything CPD just stepped in,” said Kubin.

Police said the driver that hit Henry stayed at the scene. On Wednesday, 10TV reached out to Columbus police to see if any charges have been filed but has not heard back.

Kubin said she knows Henry has a long road ahead of him, but the people that love him will be right by his side every step of the way.

“Like they always say, it takes a village to raise a child. I think in a scenario like this, it does really take a village to kind of home in on the individual and kind of lift their spirits,” said Kubin.
