Police identify man struck, killed by vehicle in south Columbus crash

Columbus police have identified the man killed in a crash in south Columbus.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Columbus police have identified the man killed in a crash in south Columbus.

Columbus police said officers and medics responded around 11:05 p.m. Wednesday. Police said Matthew Stapleton, 31 was walking on Lockbourne Road just north of Williams Road when he was struck by a vehicle.

The driver did not remain on the scene. Other drivers did stop to try and help the pedestrian, but Stapleton was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses say the driver who struck him was traveling in a white Saturn Ion. That person went west on Williams Road after fleeing the scene.

The Accident Investigation Unit responded and initiated an investigation, which remains ongoing.
