Original Tuskegee Airman, former Franklin County Board of Elections Deputy Director passes away

COLUMBUS, Ohio - An original Tuskegee Airman who held multiple offices in Ohio passed away last week.

According to his obituary, Hilton Carter passed away on May 6. He was 91.

Carter served as a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force and served in the Pacific Theater in 1947 as a crew member for missions in Japan.

After receiving his honorable discharge in 1949, he continued to serve his country for another nine years as a flight engineer.

After marrying his wife Odessa, the couple moved to Los Angeles.

Carter became active in the Democratic Party.

When he came to Columbus, he was elected as a 6th Ward Committeemen and County Central Committeemen.

Carter also worked as Deputy Treasurer, Treasurer, and Deputy Auditor for the City of Columbus and Assistant Deputy Auditor for the State of Ohio.

He retired as the Deputy Director of the Franklin County Board of Elections.

A private visitation and funeral will be held on May 13 complete with military honors.
