DAYTON, Ohio — Police say a detective who was shot at a house in Dayton while serving a drug-related warrant has died after being taken off life support.

Dayton police Chief Richard Biehl says Jorge Del Rio died Thursday. Authorities say Del Rio was shot in the face Monday while working with a Drug Enforcement Administration task force.

Authorities say detectives announced themselves as law enforcement officers before entering the house and Del Rio was shot entering a basement. No one else was injured.

“Earlier today, hundreds of law enforcement officers, including dozens of Drug Enforcement Administration agents, gathered at Grandview Hospital to honor and bid farewell to our fallen colleague who one final time acted to save lives through the generous gift of organ donation,” the city of Dayton said in a statement.

The suspected shooter has been identified as Nathan Goddard. He is charged with assaulting an officer with a deadly weapon.

Two others were charged with conspiring to distribute drugs.

Authorities also recovered three weapons — each with 30 round magazines — cash, fentanyl and marijuana.

Del Rio is a 30-year veteran of the Dayton Police Department and has been with the DEA task force since 2000.

According to the city, he leaves behind his wife Kathy, five daughters, three grand-daughters, and another grandchild on the way.
