CLEVELAND (AP) — An Ohio woman and her boyfriend have been sentenced to life in prison for the death of her 4-year-old daughter, who prosecutors say was abused, neglected and emaciated.
Jurors in county court in Cleveland convicted 24-year-old Sierra Day and 27-year-old Deonte Lewis of aggravated murder and other charges in the March 2018 death of Aniya Day-Garrett.
Day didn't speak at the sentencing Wednesday. Her lawyer argued she should eventually get an opportunity to push for parole, but the judge refused that.
Lewis could be eligible for parole after 20 years. He said in court that he loved the child and wouldn't have hurt her.
A medical examiner's office determined Aniya died slowly after suffering a stroke caused by a blow to the head in the two weeks before her death.
