The Ohio State University announced Tuesday that it reached $5.8 million in settlements with 23 survivors in five lawsuits related to sexual abuse by a former university-employed physician.
Dr. Richard Strauss worked for the university from 1978 to 1998. He died in 2005.
An investigation launched by the university found that Strauss abused students during his time and the university administration failed to appropriately respond.
A total of 185 survivors have now reached settlements with the university totaling $46.7 million with the university.
"The university has condemned Strauss' reprehensible conduct and expressed its appreciation to survivors for coming forward. Our work toward restorative justice continues," Ohio State President Kristina Johnson said in a statement.
In March, Ohio State announced a settlement with nearly half of the survivors who brought claims against the university.
"Our ongoing negotiations with Ohio State have resulted in a fair settlement process that acknowledges the harm inflicted on individual survivors and provides a pathway to healing. Once again, Ohio State has stepped forward and done the right thing," said Rick Schulte, lead negotiator for the plaintiffs' firms in both settlements.
According to the university, all of the participating survivors will dismiss their claims against the university.
