Newark police officer arrested, charged with improper handling of firearm

Brunton was charged with improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony.

The Newark police department was forced to arrest one of its own on Sunday night.

Police responded to a call of shots fired in the area of Surrey Drive on Sunday evening.

Officers found a full-size pickup truck fleeing the area after the shots were fired and officers located several .40 caliber shell casings at the scene.

Officers in the area of North 21st Street and Ohio 16, heard more shots fired. The officers again saw a Cadillac Escalade pick-up truck which matched the description of the suspect’s vehicle. Officers recognized the driver to be Todd Brunton.

Brunton is a detective with the department. When he was pulled over, it was discovered that Brunton had a .40 caliber Glock which appeared to have been recently fired. The casings recovered also matched the firearm recovered from the defendant.

Brunton was charged with improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony.

He received a $10,000 cash/surety bond.

He is scheduled to return to court for a 3 p.m. preliminary hearing on Dec. 7.
