Mayor's office approving requests, social media posts for Columbus police

Through open records requests, 10TV obtained texts between Mayor Andrew Ginther’s office and the Columbus Division of Police.

Prior to the protests in downtown, Columbus police could respond to interview requests or post to social media without permission but that has changed.

Through open records requests, 10TV obtained texts between Mayor Andrew Ginther’s office and the Columbus Division of Police.

Several asked the mayor’s office for permission to post on social media for things from asking for help to identify a theft suspect to post images from body-worn cameras.

At times, taking up to a week for approval.

Mayor Ginther was asked if he's trying to control the information being released.

“We are making sure that information that is being shared with the public is complete, accurate and thorough,” Ginther responded.

This comes as a group is circulating petitions trying to get a recall of the mayor put on the November ballot.

“I share their frustration and I've heard the frustration of our neighbors and folks in the community who demand reform and change. We're continuing to take concrete steps,” Ginther said.

We asked the mayor's office if they are having other departments go through his office for permission to post information online but did not receive an answer.
