A man accused of killing his girlfriend’s daughter pleaded not guilty in court Monday.
James Byrd, 53, is facing a murder charge in the shooting death of 28-year-old Rae’Lynn Thomas.
The shooting happened on Tracy Circle in southwest Columbus on August 10.
Thomas’ family her death was a hate crime and that Byrd killed her for being transgender.
But the prosecutor said Ohio law does not provide extra protection based on transgender status.
Byrd remains behind bars on $2 million bond.
