Sheriff: Swatting incident led to heavy police presence at Licking Valley HS

A parent was detained after showing up at the high school with a weapon upon hearing reports of an active shooter.

NEWARK, Ohio — A swatting incident led to a heavy law enforcement response at Licking Valley High School Friday morning.

According to Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorp, his office received a call over a possible active shooter at the school.

Deputies responded to the school as well as troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, officers with the Newark Police Department and other agencies.

The high school and the nearby middle school were swept by law enforcement where they found no evidence of shots fired and no reported injuries.

Thorp said a family member of a student was detained at the school after reportedly showing up with a weapon after hearing reports of a possible shooter.

Students were eventually returned to their respective schools and parents were able to pick them up.

This incident comes as other schools in central Ohio and across the state received threats.

Threats were called in at Chillicothe High School, Catholic Central High School in Springfield, Princeton High School in Sharonville and Belmont High School. Law enforcement deemed the threats to be not credible.

In the past three days, 10TV sister stations in Denver, Minneapolis, New Orleans and Washington D.C. have all reported similar swatting incidents targeting schools.
