Two young children are dead following an early morning house fire in north Columbus.

Columbus fire officials say a male and female, ages 10 and 12, died in a fire at a home on Tuesday in the 3500 block of Walmar Drive.

The flames reportedly broke out in the basement of the home.

Neighbors called 911 just before 6:00 a.m. and made a mass effort to bang on windows and doors to alert the children inside. At least one person was hurt during the commotion.

The childrens' aunt and a 23-year-old man were inside the home at the time but were able to escape.

The names of the victims have not been released, pending notification of family members. A fire official adds the children were not full-time residents of the home.

Meantime, firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames and are now trying to determine how it was sparked.

Homicide and arson investigators remain on scene.
