A very select group of Ohio women left John Glenn Columbus International Airport to experience a part of their shared history that they'd never seen before.

The women were able to make the trip thanks to Honor Flight, a volunteer organization which takes veterans' to the nation's capital several times a year to see the monuments built in their honor.

But this is the first time in 77 flights that a flight was reserved only for veterans who are women.

Many of the women on the flight joined the military when public opinion was against them but the tour gives them the welcome home party they never received when their wars ended.

The tour took them to the most hallowed memorials our nation has to offer.

Of the 81 women who made the trip, 10 served in World War II, 19 served in the Korean War and 51 served in the Vietnam War.

After the tour is finished, the veterans were given folders filled with cards and letters from family and friends thanking them for their service.

Upon their return to John Glenn Columbus International Airport, more than 1,000 people greet them including several people from Westerville. The city raised the nearly $60,000 to pay for the flight.
