Franklin County coroner reports 55% increase in overdose deaths during first-quarter of 2020

FRANKLIN COUNTY, OHIO, Ohio — The Franklin County Coroner's Office released its first-quarter overdose fatality report for 2020 on Wednesday.

The coroner's office said there was an increase from 123 suspected or apparent overdose deaths in 2019 in the first quarter to 191 during the same time frame in 2020. That is an increase of 55.3%.

The 191 deaths are reported across all age groups and are separated below:

  • 20-29 years old: 14.1%
  • 30-39 years old: 27.2%
  • 40-49 years old: 20.9%
  • 50-59 years old: 26.2%
  • 60 years old and above: 11.5%

Of the overdose deaths in Franklin County in the first quarter of 2020, 70.2% are men and 29.8% are women.  68.1% are white, 30.4% are black, 1% are Hispanic and .5% are of other races.

The coroner's office said 134 of the 191 deaths tested positive for fentanyl, 79 tested positive for cocaine, 26 tested positive for methamphetamine, and 25 tested positive for alcohol. 

The coroner's office said 10.5% of the deaths were from zip code 43223, 9.4% from 43207, 8.9% from 43211, 6.3% from 43232, 4.7% each from 43206, 43219 and 43204.
