Franklin County coroner reports 14% increase in deadly overdoses in 2019

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ohio — Nearly 600 people died from drug overdoses in Franklin County in 2019, according to the Franklin County Coroner Dr. Anahi Ortiz.

Dr. Ortiz said 597 people died from overdoses in Franklin County last year, which is approximately a 14% increase from 2018.

Deaths related to opioids accounted for almost 91% of deaths in Franklin County last year, Ortiz said. That is an 13% increase from the year before and a 28% jump from 2017.

Fentanyl overdoses made up 81% of Franklin County overdose deaths in 2019.

Ortiz said near three out of four overdose deaths in Franklin County in 2019 was between the ages of 25 and 54 years old.

Sixty-nine percent of the overdose deaths were males.
