DeWine orders flags lowered in remembrance of California shooting victims

A gunman opened fired and killed 10 people at a Los Angeles-area ballroom dance during Lunar New Year celebrations. Authorities say 10 others were wounded.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Governor Mike DeWine ordered that U.S. and state of Ohio flags at public buildings and grounds be flown at half-staff in remembrance of the victims in the Monterey Park, California shooting.

A gunman opened fired and killed 10 people at a Los Angeles-area ballroom dance during Lunar New Year celebrations on Saturday. Authorities say 10 others were wounded.

The suspect, who has been identified as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a van in which authorities say he fled after people thwarted his attempt at a second shooting Saturday night.

Investigators are still looking for a motive behind the mass shooting. Its tragic impact has caused Asian American communities nationwide, including central Ohio, to mourn with pain and heartache.

Yan Sun, a leader in the Asian American community in Columbus, says no matter what the motive is, there's no excuse for a massive shooting of innocent people.

The shooting happened on a day that was supposed to be filled with celebrations for the Lunar New Year.

"This has hit not only just the California community, but this also hurts all of the AAPI community across the world,” said Sun.

The flags will be lowered at Ohio buildings and public grounds until Thursday.
