A former public information officer with the Columbus Division of Police facing child pornography charges resigned Tuesday.

COLUMBUS -- A former public information officer with the Columbus Division of Police facing child pornography charges resigned Tuesday.

Dean Worthington submitted his letter of resignation to Chief Kim Jacobs, stating his last day of employment would be Oct. 26. Worthington submitted his application for retirement on Sept. 26., according to the undated letter he sent Chief Jacobs.

Worthington is accused of downloading child pornography to his personal cell phone. Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien said the social networking website Tumblr provided a tip to law enforcement after Worthington allegedly uploaded an image of child pornography.

Worthington was indicted on one count of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material or performance, one count of pandering sexually-oriented matter involving a minor – both a 2nd-degree felony – and two counts of pandering sexually-oriented matter involving a minor.

He was relieved of his assignment in July but remained on the force.
