An Ohio State student was killed by an officer after he allegedly attacked people with a vehicle and a knife on Ohio State’s campus Monday.
The suspect, identified as 18-year-old Abdul Razak Ali Artan, was shot by Ohio State University Police Officer Alan Horujko.
According to university police, Horujko was responding to the report of an emergency call at 9:52 a.m.
It was later reported that Artan drove onto the sidewalk and struck multiple pedestrians near Watts Hall located on 19th Avenue and College Road North.
Within second of arrival, Horujko reported an officer in trouble as the suspect left the vehicle with a butcher knife and began stabbing people.
Horujko shot and killed Artan after he refused to comply. The shooting reportedly happened within one minute of Horujko arriving on the scene.
A Buckeye Alert emergency notification was sent out to the campus at 9:54 a.m. asking those on campus to shelter in place.
Ohio State’s Department of Public Safety continued to send notifications as Ohio State University Police and other law enforcement agencies continued to sweep campus for any other threats.
The shelter-in-place was lifted by the Department of Public Safety at 11:30 a.m.
Officials reported that 11 people were injured in the attack.
Dr. Andrew Thomas , Chief Medical Officer at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, said six victims were treated at his hospital. Two had suffered stabbing injuries; three were struck by the car and one for lacerations.
Of the victims at Wexner Medical Center, one was a faculty member, two were graduate students, one undergraduate student and one staff member. Officials said the affiliation of the sixth was not known.
The other victims were sent to Riverside Methodist Hospital and Grant Medical Center. The two victims at Riverside had been struck by the vehicle. Two were treated for lacerations and another for orthopedic injuries at Grant Medical Center.
During a press conference Monday night, Ohio State University Police Chief Craig Stone said the university’s camera system allowed officials to track Artan’s whereabouts and indict that he was alone in the vehicle.
The investigation is still active and ongoing. According to Ohio State, Columbus Police has taken the lead on the investigation which is consistent with standard protocol.
Horujko has been placed on administrative leave.
Classes were canceled on the Columbus campus Monday but will resume a normal schedule on Tuesday.
