COLUMBUS, Ohio — The man accused in a fatal Columbus shooting last September died of a drug overdose days later, the Franklin County Coroner's Office confirmed Friday.

Police found 52-year-old Alan Jones dead on Sept. 29, shortly after he was identified as a suspect in the murder of 48-year-old Charles Oliver.

Police responded to Oak Street near Maclee Alley on Sept. 25 after nearby residents reported hearing a gunshot and seeing a victim lying in the alley. Arriving emergency responders found Oliver and pronounced him dead at the scene shortly after 4:40 p.m.

When officers found Jones dead days later, they said his death did not appear to be criminal in nature. A coroner's report released Friday states Jones died of a combination of fentanyl and cocaine and his death was ruled accidental.
