Just in time for the weekend and temperatures in the 90-degree range, you may be planning some time poolside. There are some important reminders from emergency medical experts this week in the 10TV What’s Going Around report.
First, while it may appear to be common sense, experts say your kids need to learn how to swim. A National Institutes of Health (NIH) study revealed that formal swimming lessons are associated with an 88-percent reduction in the risk of drowning in 1 to 4-year-olds.
Dr. Mike Patrick of Nationwide Children's Hospital said even when there's a lifeguard, a parent or guardian should also be watching.
"Constant supervision, even if there's a lifeguard present, you want some adult in your party to be constantly watching your kids in the water,” he said.
Some other key pool safety strategies — never leave a child unattended in or near the water and teach your kids to stay away from drains. If the pool is in your backyard, be sure there are proper barriers, covers and alarms on and around it. It is also advised that you learn to perform CPR.
