Parents the anxiety you may be feeling as you send your child off to school for the first time—or to a new school is normal.
The experts say your assignment is to consider how you convey what you’re feeling to the kids. There is only one right answer—and that is to be positive.
Dr. Mike Patrick of Nationwide Children’s Hospital said you have to be their cheerleader.
“If there are things you're thinking that could be challenges for them, spell what those are but then what can your child do to really excel at school and meet those challenges," he said.
Dr. Mike also emphasized that stress in kids that lasts over a long period of time is considered 'toxic.'
Toxic stress can increase hormone levels that affect health and lead to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity. Families can fight toxic stress by building resiliency in the kids, starting with a foundation of trust.
“A relationship with an adult where you can talk about hard topics but in a way that is positive,” said Dr. Mike.
The emergency medical expert said with an open dialogue it is possible for parents to also deal with subjects or situations that are difficult.
