OhioHealth neurosurgeon performs life-saving surgeries in Kenya

Mission accomplished and healing restored.

A Central Ohio neurosurgeon led a team of experts to the third-largest city in Kenya and his hometown.

OhioHealth neurosurgeon Victor Awuor’s mission included four other neurosurgeons from the same area and a contingent of health care providers and experts.

Their work in June included life-saving brain, spine, and trauma surgeries.

Dr. Awuor said the 33 patients would otherwise have to wait until they could afford to travel to the capital city for care.

“We did a lot of degenerative spine surgery. We did surgeries on patients with brain tumors," he said.

Dr. Awuor leads what's called the Kisumu Neuroscience Initiative, which is working to help recruit, retain, educate and employ other neurosurgeons in western Africa.
