A car accident that killed a Grove City teen Saturday night is still under investigation. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened on Beatty Road in Pleasant Township just after 9:00 p.m.
18-year-old Weston Baker lost control of a 2008 Honda Civic, drove off the road and struck a utility pole.
Baker was not injured, but his passenger, 17-year-old Derrick Norwood, later died at the hospital.
Friends and family of Norwood stopped by the scene Sunday to leave flowers and grieve.
Homeowners living along Beatty Road tell 10TV Saturday’s fatal wreck brings up old concerns in the neighborhood.
"[W]e've seen (drivers) probably go 90 to 100 miles per hour down through here,” Ron Kientz recalls. He hears cars fly by on his street every day, but a different sound on Beatty Road Saturday night caught his attention. "We heard a loud boom and like a flash, and then the power went out."
Ron and Judy Kientz say they were at home reading the paper around 9:15 p.m. when the noise brought them to their front window. When they looked out, Ron says he saw a young man crawling out of a mangled car and called 911
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office says it appears 18-year-old Weston Baker lost control of a 2008 Honda Civic, went off the road and struck a utility pole. Baker’s passenger, 17-year-old Derrick Norwood, did not survive.
Investigators say both teens had seatbelts on.
Neighbors say speeding has become a real problem on Beatty Road. However, investigators did not say if Baker had been speeding at the time of the crash on Saturday.
"I hope out of this tragedy, maybe the county will try to do something and keep the speed a little bit under control through down here,” Kientz added.
Meantime, more than a dozen teenagers stop by Kientz's property Sunday to grieve the loss of a friend.
Norwood was a student at Grove City Christian High School. School officials say counselors will be at the school Monday.
Investigators say it is unknown if alcohol or drugs are a factor and the incident is still under investigation.
