14-year-old charged with murder in south Columbus McDonald's shooting arrested

Police say 14-year-old Eric Lanning was arrested Monday night when he surrendered at the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 14-year-old accused of killing a man outside a southside McDonald’s earlier this month is now in custody.

The Columbus Division of Police said Eric Lanning was arrested when he surrendered at the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center on Wednesday night.

Lanning is charged with murder in the fatal shooting of 43-year-old Christopher Mateen on Jan. 14.

Officers were dispatched to the 3500 block of South High Street just before 9:20 a.m. that morning following reports of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found Mateen laying in the parking lot, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Mateen was taken to Grant Medical Center in life-threatening condition. Police said he was pronounced dead at 10:03 a.m.

Authorities said the shooting occurred after Mateen confronted someone inside his stolen vehicle.
