COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man is dead and another man is arrested and charged with murder after a shooting inside The Mall at Tuttle Crossing Sunday afternoon.
Columbus Division of Police Sgt. Joe Albert said dispatchers received multiple calls about a shooting inside Sole Stop just after 2:40 p.m.
Arriving officers found a man, later identified as 25-year-old Dontarious Sylvester, inside the shoe store who was struck at least once. He was pronounced dead at 3:03 p.m.
Officers also went through other stores inside the mall to clear people out and make sure no one else was involved in the incident.
Officers took the suspect, 24-year-old Tyrone Gray Jr., into custody in the mall parking lot. He is charged with murder.
Police said a confrontation between the two men led to the shooting.
According to an affidavit filed by police in Franklin County Municipal Court, surveillance video showed the men were verbally arguing in the store.
Police wrote Sylvester then hit Gray with a handbag.
Gray then pulled out a gun and fired multiple times at Sylvester before walking out of the store and calling 911, according to the filing.
Gray posted a $50,000 bond on Monday and was released from jail.
While being interviewed by detectives at police headquarters, Gray admitted to police that he shot Sylvester and "claimed to have done so in self-defense," police wrote in the affidavit.
Police said there were at least 15 other people in the store at the time of the shooting, according to court records.
The shooting was an isolated incident and did not involve an active shooter, Sgt. Albert said. It is also unknown whether any weapons were recovered from the scene.
Sgt. Albert called the scene "chaotic" when officers arrived. He also said it may have been traumatic to those who were there shopping.
"Everyone is shopping on a Sunday inside a shoe store and doesn't think this would happen," Sgt. Albert said.
Detectives are reviewing video evidence and interviewing workers who witnessed the shooting.
Sgt. Albert said late Sunday night that he is unsure if the mall would reopen Monday.
