Police offer tips to help protect your home while away during the holidays

Protecting your home while away for the holiday season.

CANAL WINCHESTER, Ohio — Donna Fischer and 14 of her family members are escaping the cold and heading to Florida for Christmas.

“We are going to Walt Disney World in Orlando! Happiest place on earth,” she said.

While the family treats themselves on vacation, they are making sure no one treats themselves to her belongings inside her house.

“I stopped the mail,” Fischer said.

“I think just making sure it looks like someone is home. We kept a couple random lights on in the house,” said Katie Holmes.

Which is exactly what Columbus Police Community Liaison Officer Brian Newsome asks people to do.

“Very opportunity-driven time of the year,” Newsome said.

He says it only takes a few minutes to protect your house by closing curtains and keeping a couple lights on.

“I always say it's really good to have really close neighbors. They are the ones to watch out for your house when you are gone,” Newsome said.

If you want Columbus police to check on your house, they can. That's something Fischer and her family hadn't thought about, but may make that call.

Columbus police say if you can, a great idea is to get a doorbell cam so you can keep an eye on your house 24/7.
